There’s nothing like a new arrival to turn your household topsy-turvy! A new pet is fun, exciting, and sometimes challenging as everyone gets to know each other. You can make the transition more enjoyable for the whole family by being prepared for the arrival and by knowing a little about what to expect. While our pets never cease to surprise us, there are a few constants for their care that help keep those surprises to a minimum.

Basic Cat Care

Here is what you need before the arrival of a new cat/kitten:

• Food and water bowls – You can use your own household bowls or get them from a pet store, stainless steel are the best.
• Cat food – Cats have different nutritional requirements than humans, and some human food can even be harmful to cats. For this reason, don’t give your cat table scraps. Also, remember to make any changes to your cat’s diet, mixing the new food with the old to help avoid any digestive stress or diarrhea.
• Litter box and litter
• Bedding – Provide a warm, safe place where your cat can feel comfortable (but know that even then, your cat–being a cat–will decide where he sleeps)!
• Scratching post (to prevent your cat from improvising his own from your furniture)
• Toys (optional) – just be sure they are safe for cats

Be Prepared

Cats are curious creatures and will make sure to explore every nook and cranny of their new home. Here are a few tips to help you ensure your new home is safe for your new cat:

• Get down at floor level and look for potential hazards.
• Hide any exposed electrical wires and block unused electrical outlets.
• Store any pesticides, weed, and rat killers, and all medications out of his reach.
• Store items such as rubber bands, pens, pencils, needles, thread, etc. out of his reach.
• Do a little research to find out if any of your houseplants may be poisonous to cats.
