There’s nothing like a new arrival to turn your household topsy-turvy! A new pet is fun, exciting, and sometimes challenging as everyone gets to know each other. You can make the transition more enjoyable for the whole family by being prepared for the arrival and by knowing a little about what to expect. While our pets never cease to surprise us, there are a few constants for their care that help keep those surprises to a minimum.
Basic Dog Care
What You’ll Need
Here is what you need before the arrival of a new dog/puppy:
- Food and water bowls
- Dog food – Dogs have different nutritional requirements than people. Do not give your dog table scraps, as some foods which people can eat may be harmful to your dog. For any dog under 6 months old or under 7 pounds, three meals per day are recommended. This may be reduced to two meals per day when the dog is over 6 months old or over 7 pounds. Any changes to your dog’s diet should be made gradually, mixing the new food with the old to help avoid any digestive stress and diarrhea.
- Collar and leash
- Brush or comb
- Toys (optional) – Make sure any toys are safe and cannot be swallowed.
